Concrete Walkways and Sidewalks in Stickney

No more lifted edge to trip on. Old walk out, new one poured even with the porch and the drive, sloped so rain goes to the grass.

Every Panel Even With the Next One

Walks around here take a pounding. Frost lifts the panels. Salt eats the surface. Tree roots in the parkway push up the edges. And in a lot of Stickney homes, the walk down the gangway is the only way to the back door, squeezed between two houses with nowhere for water to go. When a panel lifts half an inch, somebody catches a toe on it. We replace walks so that does not happen again. The old concrete comes up and goes away. We dig past the soft stuff, put down stone and compact it so every panel sits on the same firm footing. A typical walk is poured about four inches thick, more where it crosses a driveway or takes heavy wheels. The slope gets set so water runs off to the side, toward the grass or a drain, and never back toward the foundation. That matters most in a gangway, where a walk pitched the wrong way can push water straight at the basement wall. Heights get matched at the porch, the drive and the public walk so there is no lip. Edges get rounded, the surface gets a broom texture for winter grip, and joints get cut at even spacing. Then the forms come out, dirt goes back along the edges, and the crew cleans up before leaving.

What a Walk Replacement Includes

Short or long, these steps are on every one.

  • Old walk removed

Broken or heaved panels taken out and hauled.

  • Firm footing

Soft soil dug out, stone compacted so panels settle as one.

  • Right thickness

Roughly four inches where people walk, thicker under wheels.

  • Side slope

Water steered to grass or a drain, away from the house.

  • Matched heights

No lip at the porch, the drive or the city walk.

  • Broomed top

Texture that grips on wet and icy days.

  • Even joints

Spaced so cracks stay in the grooves.

  • Edges cleaned up

Forms pulled and soil back against the new walk.

Out With the Old Walk

  1. Measure and price

We check the run, the heights and where water heads, then write up demo, stone, depth and surface on one sheet.

  2. Tear out and prep

Old panels out, soft ground dug, stone compacted and forms set to slope.

  3. Pour and clean

Walk poured, edged, broomed and jointed, cured under cover, then forms out and the area swept.

Why Neighbors Call Us for Walks

  • Gangway know-how

We pitch narrow walks so water clears the house on both sides.

  • No trip edges

Every height matched to what the walk meets.

  • Gone when we leave

Old concrete, forms and mess all hauled off.

  • About four inches thick
  • Pitched off the house
  • Heights matched
  • Broomed for winter

Walk Heaved or Crumbling?

Length and route are all we need at first. Slope and depth get covered on the phone, then we stop by.
